Soon after getting engaged at a riverside park in Brooklyn, Lindsay Norene and Grant Groher were joined by an unwelcome guest: Hurricane Sandy. They spent two days celebrating in the city, brazenly ignoring the approaching storm before heading home to Houston to start planning their big day.

Seeking a fun, unforgettable destination for their wedding, the couple chose Lowndes Grove Plantation in Charleston. “I grew up in Georgia and always loved the idea of the Old South,” Lindsay says. “How can you not after being raised on Gone with the Wind? When I saw Lowndes Grove, I just knew we had to get married there. … When you step onto the property, you feel as though you have gone back in time.”

The couple chose to let the plantation’s natural surroundings shine by keeping the decor simple and elegant. “My vision for our wedding was inspired by the idea that simplicity is the ultimate form of sophistication,” Lindsay says. “I tried to avoid the temptation to keep adding unnecessary details. For example, we didn’t need any elaborate decorations for the ceremony because the trees and the river were beautiful enough. We also chose smaller table arrangements and muted colors for the design. Ultimately, I wanted the wedding to be simply about love and family.”

The food-loving bride and groom created a menu highlighting the region’s unique flavors to their out-of-town guests. “We really wanted everyone to have a true Southern comfort food experience mixed with a Charleston seafood flair,” Lindsay says. The food from Fish included crab cakes, mini BLTs, bacon-wrapped quail legs, boiled peanuts, and shrimp and cheese grits with fried green tomatoes.

Lindsay prided herself on being a hands-on bride, but planning the affair from Texas presented its own set of challenges, which is why she hired Sara Cavallon Celebrations. “I didn’t want to just show up to my wedding that was planned by someone else, and Sara really got that,” she says. “On the wedding day, Sara was coordinating the vendors, putting together the final details and maintaining our timeline as I enjoyed the special day with my family and bridesmaids. That was truly invaluable. I trusted her to make it all happen as we had envisioned, and I can actually say that not one thing went wrong the whole day.”
